Old Window's Energy
Efficiency!

After over 15 years in this business we estimate that fewer than half of those people living in houses with old windows have ever experienced them working the way they were intended. Most of those who call us for estimates have been living with old windows that shake, rattle, stick, fall, don't lock, don't open, don't close, or fall apart for most of their lives. This is not because of incompetent design; it is because of lack of maintenance.

The art of repairing old windows had almost died out, but we are reviving it!

Contrary to the popular belief that all old windows should be replaced by "modern" ones, there are many reasons to think twice before doing so.

When we show them how an old window should work they are usually surprised and delighted. Sometimes it is as simple as scraping off some excess paint. Other times all it needs is a new rope or two.

Many people decide that their old windows are an excellent investment and have us do a complete restoration, which can include changing all the ropes to copper chain, adding permanent weatherstripping, and cosmetic and structural work.

The Brookline Planning Dept. warned, in a notice to all residents, that "Windows should not be replaced unless absolutely necessary." They explained how "Wood windows are energy efficient... (and) in conjunction with a standard exterior storm window unit, provide a better energy standard than double-glazed (thermo-pane) windows. Older wood windows do not necessarily have higher maintenance costs. For example, replacing the glass in many of the newer windows requires removing and replacing the entire sash, or even throwing it away and ordering a new one." the notice concluded.

When we restore a window, we are simply removing all the impediments to its proper operation and bringing everything back as closely as possible to what it was originally. This means the window will open, close and lock with minimal physical effort. A window hung on ropes and weights was designed to be perfectly balanced and easy to operate. Unlike all "modern" windows, it does not have any springs to wear out or plastic parts to break.

"Your old windows have lasted since your house was built. They could last that long again with proper maintenance. Do you think a plastic window could do as well? Just ask our customers if they're satisfied!"
