Of all the replacement balance systems I've seen in over 15 years of fixing windows, the spiral
tube is the only one I'll use. Not necessarily because it will outlast all others, but simply
because it is the easiest and least expensive to replace. Many people learn to adjust and
replace the tubes themselves, they are that easy. Best of all, spiral tube conversion leaves the
original wood framing exposed, and no plastic parts visible.
If your windows are pre-1800 and never had a balance system or just had spring clips, spiral tubes are a good alternative, altering the appearance very little. If you had "spring tracks", those ugly metal or plastic things that cover the casing on both sides and make noises, conversion to spiral tubes is often the best alternative. We would prefer to return your windows to the original rope and pulley system, but this is only possible if they were that way in the first place. |
